2009 Production Season
Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
More humorous than the film version starring Johnny Depp, this spellbinding musical comedy thriller (book by Hugh Wheeler and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) tells the tale of a 19th Century London barber who vows revenge for the rape of his wife by dispatching various victims with his razor, and, as if that weren’t enough, his immoral, conniving landlady cooks the remains into meat pies.
As one Theatre critic for The New York Times said of the 1991 revival, it is "a culinary musical melodrama with villains, heroes, heroines and an ending in which everyone receives his or her just desserts." We just call it Epic theater at its best…with absolutely glorious music to die for.
The show, featuring a cast of thirty of New Jersey’s most talented young performers, played nine performances at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark from July 17 through July 26, then traveled fifty miles south to the historic Algonquin Arts Theatre in Manasquan for seven additional performances from July 31 through August 9.
